Thanksgiving Cookin’ (and a FREE Printable Menu)

Ok, y’all.

I know I said I’m basking in the season – and I am, TRULY. But I wouldn’t be true to myself if I wasn’t also organizing and categorizing and planning every detail.

I appointed myself the official guardian of The Menu for all of our family holidays many years ago, and if I were on the outside looking in, I’d say that list-making lunatic needs to CALM HER BITS.

Like, all the way down.

But I’m not on the outside looking in. I’m the list-making lunatic. And everything is FINE.

So. I’ve got my house prep list, which starts a couple of weeks out. Deep clean my house, plan seating and gather/borrow/rent tables and chairs, put together yard games and activities for the kids, stock up on socks for guests (we’re a no-shoe household), make sure all of the lap blankets are freshly laundered (because everyone will snuggle down once they’re full of Thanksgiving food), make a Thanksgiving playlist..

All pretty standard stuff, And then my beloved menu list.

I start with the menu (here’s this year’s):

Appetizers: Spinach Dip/Pita Chips, Cheese Ball

Main Course: Roasted Turkey, Cornbread Dressing, Sweet Potato Casserole, Mashed Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole, Corn Casserole, Green Bean & Corn Casserole (yes, it’s different than the other two!), Broccoli Salad

Dessert: Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Pecan Pie, Dutch Apple Pie

And then move on to the shopping list. Once that’s detailed and I know how many potatoes (a lot) and flats of bacon (a double lot) I’ll need to buy, I like to walk through the prep timeline and make myself daily lists. Say, for example, cooking up six packages of bacon because three of our family recipes call for bacon – I’ll add that to my ‘three days before’ section, along with making the cheese ball, dip, and broccoli salad. The day before Thanksgiving is my biggest prep day, because I assemble all of the casseroles and bake the pies on that day.

I honestly don’t know how people manage to pull these things off without a timeline, y’all. I work the week of Thanksgiving so all of this is happening in the evenings after I get home, and I’m pretty sure I’d lose my lunatic mind if I didn’t have a plan.

Since I can’t be the only person who loves a good list, how about a quick printable so you can join in the fun? Click below to download one!

Happy Monday, friends!
